The New Suzuki Swift Auto: Small Size, Big Attitude

Last week I had the pleasure of zipping around in the brand new Suzuki Swift Auto and let me tell you, this little thing packs a serious punch. You know how they say dynamite comes in small packages? Yeah, that’s this car. A real pocket rocket. And honestly, I had my doubts at first but once I got behind the wheel, the Swift made a believer out of me.

Usually I’d ease you into the review with interiors, specs and all that good stuff but not today. This time, we’re going straight for the power and performance. According to Suzuki, this lightning bolt on wheels goes from 0 to 60 km/h in 12.5 seconds. And while that might not sound super impressive on paper, it’s the real-world drive where this car shines.

The steering is light and responsive, perfect for darting through city traffic and squeezing into tight parking spots. But take it on the highway and surprise — this thing moves. Like actually moves. Even with four people in the car, the Swift pushed through with no hesitation. That said, it’s not exactly whisper quiet when you put your foot down. The engine starts getting vocal, sounding a bit like it’s trying harder than it should. But nothing a little volume boost on the stereo can’t fix, right?

Under the hood it’s got a 1.2L engine with a 5-speed manual transmission and fuel consumption from as low as 4.4L per 100km. And from my seven-day joyride, I averaged around 6.4L per 100km. That’s solid fuel saving right there.

Let’s talk glow-up. The Swift has had a facelift and it’s looking fresh with a more modern, polished vibe. Inside, you’ve got just enough tech to feel current but don’t expect Range Rover levels of luxury. The storage situation is tight — no centre storage box, just a little space to pop a can of Coke or your phone. But you do get door cup holders, a centre fold-down tray, USB and Type C ports, and yes, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are in the mix. The infotainment screen is on the smaller side but it gets the job done. Old-school analog dials keep things simple with speed and fuel stats front and centre.

Space wise, the rear seats are decent for short friends or kids. Just don’t expect limousine legroom. And there are no charging ports in the back which is a bit of a bummer. The boot gives you 265 litres — think about 8 Woolies bags if you pack strategically. Again, it’s a small car so space is tight but manageable.

Some sweet features include a reverse camera and adaptive cruise control. These little touches really elevate the drive. And honestly, this car is ridiculously economical. It’s the kind of car that makes you feel like you're winning even when petrol prices are doing the most.

So who’s it for? Honestly, everyone. Your gran would love it. Your mom would love it. Your teenage sibling who just got their license would be obsessed. It's not made for a family of four going on road trips every weekend, but for one or two people looking for something fun, reliable and budget-friendly, the Swift makes perfect sense.

Starting at R224 900, this car gives you good value with fresh styling, solid performance and just enough tech to keep things interesting. I’m giving it a solid 7.5 out of 10.

A total go-getter.
